As I’ve mentioned in an earlier blog post there is scientific evidence supporting the idea that beauty, whether from a social norm or biological perspective, plays a significant role in our everyday lives – especially for women. In Korea it is not uncommon for prospective employers to require their applicants to provide full photographs and height in addition to their family backgrounds to facilitate the hiring process. Yes, the standards of Asian beauty has a name – and it likes to be called by it.
I’d go as far to say that physical attractiveness is an ace card that those who have play at almost every single metaphorical twist and turn in the game of life. Has it ever happened to you; the popular girl goes up to the lecturer to ask a question and is not only quite immediately entertained by said lecturer, but with such an enthusiasm which infects you as well. But when it comes to your turn you’re greeted with an answer through a side glance along the lines of, “Go find out yourself [insert non-flattering descriptive word here]”. Yeah wow oh joy thanks for nothing. Fortunately individuals who are shameless to such degree are rare in between.
It’s no wonder, therefore, how many young professionals are starting to see cosmetic surgery as the edge they need to stay relevant in this highly competitive world. Whether it’s career, romantic relationships or getting random favours from random strangers – being beautiful definitely has its perks.
For the sake of simplicity and relevancy I am only including a list of SIX standards of Asian beauty that matter to us (East Asians: specifically Chinese, Korean and Japanese). Even so it can differ quite greatly (some guys, on the other hand, want to achieve a manly physique without compromising their boyish features such as prominent nose tips, less angular jaw-lines, and double eyelids). This list could go on and on but here’s what I found that mattered most:

The Standards of Asian Beauty:
1. Double Eyelids.
Known as futae in Japanese or ssangapul in Korean, double eyelids are very, very popular with East Asians as “DEE” most important facial feature to have, which is ironic considering that it isn’t an inherent feature a large portion of the East Asian species. Nevertheless, double eyelids are the envy of our mono-lidded sisters everywhere, and blepharoplasty (the operation to create double eyelids) is the single most popular cosmetic surgery undertaken by East Asian girls everywhere. As far as standards of Asian beauty go, this one definitely takes a high spot.

2. Fair, White Complexion.
Some of us resort to applying dripping amounts of sun screen (normally included in moisturizers) to keep the sun from turning us brown as a Pygmy Indian (or as short as one). However, not all of us are gifted with fair white skin, or have the time, patience and discipline for the former whitening technique. Not having fair skin is probably the one thing that seriously bugs me, which I’ve managed to keep somewhat under control by staying in the office during the day (pack your meal for the office) and swimming only at night.
But if you aren’t able to commit to such a strict regimen or were born with naturally darker skin and it affects your self-esteem, then cosmetic treatments such as skin whitening injections and laser skin resurfacing can have effective long-term whitening results.
3. Clear Flawless Complexion.
The ultimate day-breaker for me is waking up realizing that my skin is less than flawless (pimples, acne scars, and so forth). A clear complexion doesn’t only [subtly] scream elegance and youth, but also good health. East Asian people place a lot of emphasis on clear skin, and therefore laser treatments such as Q-switch YAG laser treatment and HIFU to remove acne scars and other skin nasties are extremely popular.
I blame my active sports life and irresponsible acne-picking and scratching for my current situation. Remember: always wash your face and dry it with a clean face towel as soon as possible after playing sports. DO NOT pick at pimples and for gawd’s sake DO NOT constantly finger your face! And drink lots of water, and…
4. Small, round, V-shaped face.
The identifying feature of a femininity throughout the ages. Big, square jaws and faces are typically masculine features. You aren’t trying to look masculine, are you? Unfortunately the process of getting the ideal V-shaped face of femininity is difficult and next to impossible to achieve without surgical reconstruction. Once bone ossifies it’s permanent. Very permanent. Bone restructuring is an expensive and relatively painful procedure (they literally cut in and grind the bone off for crying out loud) so it’s important to think hard and long before committing to this type of surgery.
5. Thin Nose Bridge, Pointed at the Tip.
Small noses with a high bridge, the tip pointed ever so slightly pointed upwards, and a nasal base about one length of the width separating the eyes. Details, details, details – in short, nose like an ogre’s is a no-no.

6. Long Hair
In many cultures, long hair (especially for women), has been seen as a natural biological indicator of good long term health, fertility and youth. I’m not making this up (jump to the biological significance of this Wiki on Long Hair). By straining my little brain even I’m able to connect the dots. I mean, if an individual weren’t healthy (say said person has a scalp disease; dandruff, Psoriasis, etc.) their hair would be falling out like autumn leaves, giving it no time to grow out long. Makes sense.
Being sporty is no excuse for not wanting to keep long hair and lobbing it all off. Sure, peer pressure for being vain and impractical is a nasty sentiment that I can relate to (even in online gaming berating people for the sake of berating others is called ‘Griefing’ and is, coincidentally, punishable by permanent ban). But, take a look at the number of Olympic athletes who wear their hair long and still manage to WIN GOLDS. ‘Nuff said. The ponytail is the secret weapon that many seem to forget that will let you play hard while maintaining your femininity.
